Contesting Catholic Identity: The Foundation of Newman College, Melbourne, 1914–18, by Michael Francis, traces the historical events leading to the opening of the College. The book reveals that, by the time it opened its doors, Newman College had come to represent far more than just a residence for a relatively small number of university students; it was a litmus test for the very nature of Catholic identity in the state of Victoria.
One hundred years to the day, the book will be launched by Dr Val Noone OAM, fellow of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. The evening will also feature a performance of the Celtic harp by Ms Amelia Le Plastrier, after which copies of Michael’s book will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will also be provided.
