This concert brings together a wide range of baroque repertoire, from Monteverdi madrigals, which injected new life and emotion into the word-music relationship, to the music of Heinrich Schütz, whose Italian-inspired compositions bring the same intensity of vision to the sacred repertoire. Alongside these masters of seventeenth century music are late baroque works: the Missa Brevis (based on the hymn Christ lag in Todesbanden) by Georg-Philipp Telemann and one of the crowning achievements of J. S. Bach’s choral writing, the motet Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden.

Featuring the Early Music Ensemble and directed by Stephen Grant.
