In this richly illustrated free public lecture, Emeritus Professor Partha Mitter will trace Western responses to Indian art from the earliest encounters of explorers with the Exotic East to the more sophisticated but still incomplete appreciations of the 20th century. The lecture is based on Partha Mitter's celebrated book, Much Maligned Monsters: A History of European Reactions to Indian Art (1977; 2013), which is regarded as one of the art historical texts that has played a significant role in shaping modern values and judgements about art. It was selected by ARTNEWS as one of the most influential books of the 20th century.
