The word ‘charity’ does not easily come to mind in relation to colonialism. But charity is a constitutive part of every society, and is reflected in distinctive infrastructure in urban and rural areas. How did 19th century British colonialism reshape the charity infrastructure in Indian cities, and how does this feature in the charity infrastructure of these cities today?
