Bruce Beresford is best known for directing over 30 feature films, from his Academy Award winner Driving Miss Daisy (1989), to Ladies in Black (2018/19), which brought him back to his birthplace Sydney.

But he is also a significant director of opera, with productions in Italy, the USA and Australia to his credit. Beresford directed the Australian premieres of Richard Strauss’s Elektra in 1982, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt at the Sydney Opera House in 2012, and Giacomo Rossini’s Otello for Melbourne Opera in 2018.

His 2011 production of Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men with Opera Australia won Green Room awards for Best Opera Production and Best Opera Direction.

In this lecture Beresford will reflect on the experience of directing opera.

Presented as part of the Louise Hanson-Dyer Colloquia.
