An Act of Showing is an exhibition which will stage a ‘material conversation’ between 26 invited artist-run initiatives, including 3 from the Asia-Pacific region. The project aims to provoke a material conversation focusing on place and situatedness. Our proposition is that artist-run initiatives are a unique response to a local context. We are inviting the ARIs to propose a work - a creative response - expressing the local place and situatedness of their ARI, asking how does place matter? The contribution can be in any format (e.g. paintings, photos, text, objects/sculpture, sound, video).

We are inspired by the writings of artist/writer Chris Kraus, who spoke of “radical localism” to point to the importance of the local places of art-making compared to global-centrism, arguing for geography to be fully considered if we are to understand the “how, where and to what end” of art. We want to think about what Kraus’s ideas tell us about how ARIs are situated in specific places.

The project is directed by Maria Miranda, DECRA fellow at the VCA, University of Melbourne and curated by Anabelle Lacroix. The project is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, City of Melbourne and VCA.
