Many government bodies, from local councils to federal agencies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Bureau of Meteorology, collect large amounts of data. Quite a few now even have "open by default" policies, requiring non-sensitive data to be made freely available to the public. How well is this working out? What are people doing with it? How can you get your hands on it? Steve will introduce us to the exciting world of open data, tell us where to find some interesting data to explore, and delve into some of the challenges facing the the open data team at the City of Melbourne.
