The term ‘selfie’ is enmeshed in our contemporary culture, whether it be in relation to celebrities and ordinary people populating Instagram with selfies, crowds clamouring around sporting, political or pop culture idols to get a well-placed selfie, or backgrounders to recent research on the benefits or drawbacks of selfie culture. This talk will look at the arts, particularly literature, as a selfie. It will suggest that Indian Australian literature can be not just any selfie, but a selfie of a country. It will address, in a fresh way, the old question of who is allowed to tell certain stories.
