10% of the Time it Works Every Time: Critical Thoughts on the Academic System

Lecture Theatre B, Level 7
Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre

Level 10, 305 Grattan St, Melbourne

As scientists and physicians, we all want to have an impact and help improve the lives of patients but sometimes we let another kind of impact factor hinder our progress. Perverse scientific incentives drive our academic system and allow us to tolerate the sloppy, lazy science that we see every week in the so-called “top tier” journals. Dr Glenn Begley will ask: Is a highly-cited paper always a high-quality paper, and shouldn’t we be focused on real-life impact factors?

Light lunch will be served from 12.30pm.
