Meaning, Mediation, Metaphor: Embodied Learning through the Arts

Meaning, Mediation, Metaphor: Embodied Learning through the Arts

Presented by Professor Susan Wright - University of Melbourne

The current educational landscape places high emphasis on measurable outcomes and increased achievement in narrowly-focused content areas. In the process, the arts are relegated to the margins of the dominant discussion about education. Yet the arts are fundamental to how we make meaning of ourselves, our environments and our sociocultural interactions.

This presentation focuses on the significant role that arts education plays in learning. At its core, the arts are embodied experience through action and representation. The lecture will illustrate how artistic experience is manifested through symbol and metaphor and how education in and through the arts is mediated through semiotic processes.
