Dean's Lecture Series - Childcare and Workforce Participation

Dean's Lecture Series - Childcare and Workforce Participation

Presented by The Honourable Sussan Ley MP, Assistant Minister for Education.

Wednesday 30 April, 6pm -- 7pm

The work lives of Australian families are no longer strictly nine-to-five. Australia's child care system needs to support today's families, rather than languish with a model from the previous century.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of establishing more flexible child care options that are also affordable and accessible, and has tasked the Productivity Commission to undertake an Inquiry into Childcare and Early Childhood Learning.

The Productivity Commission is taking a holistic view to reform and is looking at issues facing parents returning to the workforce, rural, regional and remote communities, shift workers, and disadvantaged and vulnerable children.

The Productivity Commission Inquiry has already stimulated broad public debate on the availability, accessibility and affordability of childcare in Australia.

Assistant Minister for Education, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, will speak about the need for sectoral reform, the Productivity Commission's broad terms of reference and the views expressed via the consultation process so far, as well as the important relationship between childcare and female workforce participation.
