Former president of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Melbourne and President of the Asian Development Bank Administrative Tribunal, Gillian Triggs will be discussing the legal right of all Australians to access adequate health services, viewed through the prism of international human rights law and the failure of Australian law to ensure these rights are directly enforceable.
Gillian has combined an academic career with international commercial legal practice and has advised the Australian and other governments and international organisations on international legal and trade disputes. After her tenure with the Human Rights Commission ended, Gillian joined Justice Connect as Chair to pursue her commitment to ensuring that all people have fair access to the justice system, including people experiencing homelessness, elder abuse, family violence and financial exploitation. She is focused on the implementation in Australian law of the human rights treaties to which Australia is a party, and on working with nations in the Asia Pacific region on practical approaches to human rights.
This free public lecture is delivered as part of Global Health and Human Rights, a postgraduate elective coordinated by the Nossal Institute for Global Health.
