Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has long imported theory from other fields, such as psychology. Yet we’re not putting theory to good use – why is that so? Taking Self-Determination Theory in HCI games scholarship as an example, this talk examines conditions and practices that perpetuate shallow and unreflective uses of the theory. Based on these findings, I outline a research agenda for “theory translation” to help develop more intentional and impactful theory use practices.

In this seminar, Dr Tom Kennie will provide an overview of current and future trends in higher education (HE) leadership development, drawing upon extensive field experience in the UK, Australia and beyond. Key themes to be explored include the evolving landscape of HE leadership development, featuring case-based examples from recent practice.

Dr Kennie will examine role-based approaches to leadership development, leadership transitions, and their impact on personal, team, and organisational growth. He will discuss discipline-based and collaborative approaches to leadership development, illustrated through current case studies. The potential of accredited online delivery will be addressed, along with reflections on current and future challenges and opportunities in the field. His presentation will also cover strategies for building internal delivery capacity for HE leadership development across both academic and professional staff, exploring potential areas of collaboration between HE leadership development and educational development.

Furthermore, the session will address the development of ‘third space’ HE leaders, global partnership initiatives to tackle common issues, and the leadership of HE leadership development itself. This comprehensive exploration of HE leadership development will provide attendees with a nuanced understanding of the field’s current state and future directions.
