There are unique challenges faced by the atoll and coastal communities in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville due to climate change impacts, such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events.
Despite the socio-economic implications of these challenges for local livelihoods, culture, and infrastructure, there have been efforts made to develop a subnational policy on the blue-green economy in response to the challenges faced by our communities and their social and economic well-being. The Blue Green Economy Policy prioritises sustainable economic growth while addressing the pressing environmental concerns. This could include initiatives such as renewable energy projects, sustainable agriculture practices, coastal protection measures, and community-based adaptation strategies.
By emphasising the intersectionality of environmental, social, and economic factors and the need for innovative policy solutions, we hope our discussion inspires students and academics alike to engage in interdisciplinary research and advocacy efforts to promote resilience and sustainability in vulnerable coastal communities within the Oceania region.
As the climate crisis continues to worsen, so does awareness of the need to prepare for and respond to increasingly severe and frequent ecological disasters, risks and impacts. Urgent and accelerated CO2 emissions reduction clearly remains the most vital priority. Even then, recent climate science provides compelling evidence that even the most rapid emissions reduction actions will be insufficient to prevent severe social and ecological consequences.
This webinar will therefore bring together researchers with diverse experience and expertise to identify and explore actions that can:
- strengthen individual and community capacity to address the health and wellbeing impacts of cascading and compounding climate and ecological disasters, risks and challenges
- help us imagine and create just and regenerative climate-resilient societies, economies and cultures.
