China and the New World Order

Date
Oct
27
Time 6:30pm - 7:45pm
Categories Public Lecture

Journalist Cheng Lei and the University of Melbourne’s Professor of Contemporary Chinese Studies Anthony J Spires explore the domestic and global tensions shaping China’s future.

China’s growing influence is reshaping the global landscape, with far-reaching implications for economics, technology and international relations. As alliances shift and tensions evolve, understanding China’s ambitions – and how its people and the world are responding – has never been more vital.

Join journalist Cheng Lei (A Memoir of Freedom) and the University of Melbourne’s Professor of Contemporary Chinese Studies Anthony J Spires (Everyday Democracy) for a timely conversation about China’s place in the world today. Drawing on Cheng’s experiences reporting from inside the country and Spires’ research into Chinese politics and society, they will explore the forces shaping the nation’s domestic and global trajectory.

For this inaugural event in our new Scholarship to Society series, Cheng and Spires examine questions of power, democracy and influence – and what a new world order might mean for Australia. With host Associate Professor Louisa Lim, Deputy Director at the Centre for Advancing Journalism.

Presented in partnership with The Wheeler Centre and the Melbourne Public Humanities Initiative, Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne.

MACSYS Online Seminar: Global mapping of genetic interactions in yeast and human cells reveals conserved principles of genetic networks

Date
Oct
28
Time 9:30am - 11:00am
Categories Public Lecture

MACSYS is honoured to present Prof Brenda Andrews, a globally recognised pioneer in large scale genetics & cell biology research. Professor Andrews’ lab has been at the forefront of research aimed at understanding cellular signalling processes and genetic networks in yeast using functional genomics, high content screening and gene expression tools. Her lab created the first complete genetic interaction map for a model eukaryotic cell.

This seminar is hosted by MACSYS, an Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence bringing together internationally recognised researchers across mathematics, statistics, microbial systems biology, omics technologies, computer science and AI. Our vision is to make biological systems predictable.
