Dr Leslie Norins was one of the last postdoctoral fellows in immunology to be supervised personally by Sir Macfarlane Burnet. A native of Baltimore, he received his BA from Johns Hopkins University, and his MD from Duke University School of Medicine. He then came to study at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research with Sir Macfarlane, and received his PhD from the University of Melbourne. Next, he spent nine years at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC"), where he became the youngest director of its Venereal Disease Research Laboratory. Then, his growing love for medical writing led him to become an entrepreneur in medical publishing. Starting from his proverbial kitchen table, over the next 40 years he became the world's leading publisher of monthly medical newsletters for healthcare professionals.
