Riitta-Leena Metsäpelto works as a senior researcher at the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Jyvaskyla. She has a PhD from the Department of Psychology at the University of Jyvaskyla and an adjunct professorship (educational psychology, especially developmental processes) from the University of Tampere. Her research focuses on school and family as the developmental contexts for children and adolescents. She is particularly interested in utilizing longitudinal data and advanced statistical methods to understand how children, adolescents, and adults change and grow over their lifespans in social, emotional, and cognitive domains. Recently her work has focused on teachers and their professional development as a continuum from student selection through initial teacher education to working life. She has been actively involved in the renewal of student selection processes for initial teacher education in Finland and in building a conceptual model of teacher competences that maximize students’ learning, engagement, and well-being. She has teaching experience in initial teacher education at primary and secondary levels over a period of 10 years.
