In 2017, Kamil Muhammad and Brahmastyo Puji, of architecture practice pppooolll, won the Acknowledgement Prize at the LafargeHolcim Awards 2017 Asia Pacific for Growing Grassroots in Indonesia.
Their award-winning project is a training center for organic agriculture in Parung that will promote sustainable agriculture to young farmers. With the support of local stakeholders, the centre will be built on the edge of an existing village, on a parcel of land acquired by NGO Urban Poor Consortium.
Sustainability considerations are woven into all aspects of the project, from agriculture and land rights to water management and construction (construction materials are sourced from local materials such as bamboo). Working with local villagers and a farming start up, Kamil and Brahmastyo’s project is a prime example of architecture that does more than design buildings – it builds communities and improves their livelihoods.
Kamil and Brahmastyo's presentation will be preceded by an introduction by Professor Julie Willis, who is visiting Jakarta for the first time as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.
