The Medieval and Renaissance Ensemble presents English Medieval music from the 13th-15th centuries. Hear a selection of music composed for ceremonial and private entertainment with voices and instruments of the period including lute, hurdy gurdy, viols, vielle, recorders, and percussion.

Music in medieval England is reconstructed from limited sources as many of the notated examples were destroyed by the pillage of monasteries in the time of King Henry VIII. The music that remains reveals a very varied, sophisticated and rich heritage which includes instrumental music from the Robertsbridge Codex, The Old Hall Manuscript, composers Lionel Power and John Dunstable, whose fame spread throughout Europe and was known as the celebrated composer of the Contenance Angloise (English Manner). Later Medieval Music in England was very influenced by the Burgundian School of Philip the Good, including composers Guillaume Dufay and Gilles Binchois. The English Medieval style of writing included the form of the Rota or Round of which possibly the oldest surviving example is the well known round, 'Sumer is Icumen in', datable to around 1260.
