The advent of next-generation sequencing sparked the emergence of sequencing-based single-cell technologies that have enabled high-throughput, high-resolution transcriptomic/genomic analysis of individual cells. Recent single cell studies in the field of cancer biology have unmasked rare cell populations based on mRNA expression and isoforms, DNA mutations and copy-number variants (CNVs). The utility and reliability of single-cell sequencing is continuously improving with the development of dedicated analytical tools for single-cell data and complementary single cell assays.
