Vaughan Williams' The House of Life (1904) explores the distinct stylistic and technical contrast between English composers of song over a 50-year time-period. The rich, melodic music of Vaughan Williams brings differing technical and interpretative challenges to the often confronting dissonances of Britten, idiosyncratic to each compositional style. The stark aesthetic and emotional contrasts of the pieces further highlight the distinction.

Chapman will perform works including:

  • The Turn of the Screw Prologue, Benjamin Britten
  • The Turn of the Screw - "Miles...", Benjamin Britten
  • The House of Life, Ralph Vaughan Williams
  • Friendly Persuasions (Songs in Homage to Poulenc), Jake Heggie
  • Telle Jour Telle Nuit, Francis Poulenc
  • Miroirs Brulantes, Francis Poulenc
