    <p>Transformation of normal cell into neoplastic and metastatic phenotypes is aided by several surrounding components that are collectively known as the tumor microenvironment.</p>
    
    <p>The composition of this micro-environment is frequently altered to support tumor progression. To overcome hypoxic conditions tumor cells secrete angiogenic growth factors that enhance neovascularization.</p>
    
    <p>Most antitumor agents are cytotoxic in nature, designed mainly to prevent tumor growth. However, an ideal therapeutic agent should exhibit selectivity and minimal toxicity.</p>
    
    <p>As the role of the tumor microenvironment in disease progression is better understood, more effective therapeutic agents can be developed.</p>
    
    <p>This presentation will highlight the role of microenvironment factors in tumor growth and metastasis and will introduce various investigative tools developed by Merck Millipore to study this process.</p>
