Architecture before architecture: how models open design thinking

Please join us for this free public lecture and exhibition presented by Japanese architect Osamu Nishida, Founder of ONDESIGN.
This lecture accompanies the exhibition Architecture Before Architecture — Model Photographs and explores how physical models operate as critical tools for opening architectural and design thinking. Drawing on projects by ONDESIGN - including Yokohama Apartment, International Student Housing like a Town, Living with Large Gaps, House and Vacant Lot, and Tokyo Midori Labo - the lecture examines how models are used to test spatial relationships, scale, and connections to the city before architectural form becomes fixed.
Rather than presenting completed buildings, the lecture foregrounds design as a process of inquiry, highlighting the pedagogical and exploratory value of models within contemporary architectural practice.
The accompanying exhibition Architecture Before Architecture — Model Photographs is on show at the MSD on the east side of the Level 1 Atrium from 11–25 March. Following the lecture, we warmly invite you to join us for the official exhibition opening at 6pm in the Level 1 Atrium. All are welcome to attend.

Join us for a panel discussion on how cities can balance the social and environmental needs of citizens to create thriving communities
The evening will begin with a guided tour of the Woody Meadow and Melbourne Arts Precinct Plant Trials – living research sites that showcase how urban planting can cool cities and support biodiversity – followed by a panel discussion, then refreshments.
Over half of the world’s population lives in cities – a figure set to rise to 70 per cent by 2050. However, urbanisation is reducing the quality of life for many. Cities can lack accessibility, sustainability, and a sense of belonging. What is it that makes a city truly livable? How do we create thriving, inclusive communities – now and into the future?
Join us for a panel discussion on how cities can balance the social and environmental needs of citizens to create thriving communities. Experts will discuss what Melbourne – one of the world’s most livable cities – can do better to improve accessibility and inclusivity and improve urban environments, and what we’ve been getting right to achieve our top 10 ranking.
